Shearing is not pruning, and it is why hedges go hollow
Running a hedge trimmer over the outside of a shrub every few months feels like maintenance, but it creates a dense shell of growth that shades out everything inside. The interior thins, then dies, and eventually you have a green box with nothing but bare sticks under the surface. Cut it back at that point and there is no live growth left to respond.
The fix is thinning alongside shaping — reaching inside and removing whole stems at the base so light and air reach the interior. On badly overgrown shrubs, renewal pruning takes about a third of the oldest stems to the ground each year for three years, rebuilding the plant without ever leaving it looking butchered.
Timing decides whether you get flowers
Spring bloomers — azalea, forsythia, quince, spirea, climbing roses — set next year's buds soon after they finish flowering. Shear them in autumn or winter and you are cutting off the entire display. Prune those right after they bloom. Summer bloomers like crape myrtle and althea flower on new growth and are pruned in late winter. And crape myrtles do not need topping — that is the same mistake as topping a tree, just smaller.

Identify what you actually have
Bloom timing decides the schedule, and half the shrubs we are asked to cut are on the wrong one.
Thin before you shape
Whole stems out at the base first, so light reaches the interior and the plant stays green inside.
Shape to a taper
Wider at the bottom than the top. A hedge cut straight-sided or wider at the top shades its own base and goes bare at the bottom.
Respect the limits
No more than about a third of the plant in one season, and never into bare wood on conifers — junipers do not regrow from brown.
Clean up completely
Clippings hauled, beds blown, and the plants left looking deliberate rather than shorn.

How soon can you come out?
Estimates are usually within a couple of business days across all five counties. Hazard situations move to the front of the queue.
Are you insured?
General liability and workers' compensation, with the certificate sent before you book. Texas does not license tree services at state level, so this is the question that actually filters a bid list.

FAQ
Shrub & Hedge Trimming — frequently asked
When should I trim shrubs in North Texas?
It depends on when they bloom. Spring-flowering shrubs (azalea, forsythia, quince, spirea) are pruned right after they finish, because they set next year's buds soon after. Summer bloomers (crape myrtle, althea, roses) are pruned in late winter. Evergreen hedges can be shaped through the growing season, but avoid heavy cutting in the heat of a North Texas August.
Can an overgrown hedge be saved?
Usually, yes — with renewal pruning rather than one hard cut. We take about a third of the oldest stems to the ground each year for three years, which rebuilds the plant from the inside without ever leaving a bare box. The exception is junipers and most conifers: they do not regrow from bare wood, so once they are hollow, replacing is the honest answer.
Do you charge extra for difficult access?
It is priced into the quote rather than added afterwards. Access is the single biggest cost driver in this trade, which is why we look at every job in person instead of quoting from a description.
Do you serve areas outside North Texas?
Yes — our regular territory covers Tarrant, Johnson, Parker, Hill and Bosque Counties and the cities inside them. North Texas is on our normal route.
What payment methods do you take?
All standard forms — card, check, cash and bank transfer. On larger jobs a deposit is normal with the balance due on completion, after you have seen the finished work. We do not ask for payment in full before starting.
What if I only want an opinion, not work done?
That is fine and it is free. A fair share of what we look at does not need what it was quoted for. We would rather tell you that and be the people you call next time.
Do I need to be home while you work?
No, as long as we have access and have already walked the job with you. Plenty of North Texas customers are at work while we are there. We will call before we start and send photos when we finish.
Can you work around my schedule?
Usually. Most residential work happens on weekdays during business hours, but we can often arrange early starts or a specific day if access, pets or gates require it. Commercial properties routinely get after-hours or weekend scheduling.
