What a certified arborist is actually for
Arborist certification means someone has passed a broad examination in tree biology, diagnosis, soil science, pruning standards and safety, and keeps it current with continuing education. It does not make someone a better climber. What it should mean in practice is that the person looking at your tree can tell you what is wrong with it, and is not compensated for reaching a particular conclusion.
The most valuable thing an arborist does is say no. A large share of what we get called to look at does not need the removal it was quoted for — it needs deadwood out, a soil correction, or nothing at all but water. A second opinion before a four-figure removal is cheap insurance.
Beware the free inspection that always finds a removal
Storm-chasing outfits and door-knockers work on volume, and the diagnosis is reliably 'this needs to come down'. Warning signs: a diagnosis from the kerb without walking the tree, urgency about signing today, a quote with no written scope, no certificate of insurance, and no certification they will name when asked. A real credential comes with an issuing body and a number.

Walk the whole property

Look at the root collar
Half of what kills urban trees is at the base and buried: girdling roots, a flare covered by grade, collar rot.
Read the canopy
Dieback pattern, leaf colour and size, growth increment, and where in the crown the problem started.
Test where it matters
Sounding for decay, soil probe, and a lab sample when the diagnosis genuinely changes the treatment.
Write it down
Findings, options, costs and what happens if you do nothing — in writing, so you can get another opinion on it.

Certified Arborist — frequently asked
Is the arborist visit really free in North Texas?
Yes for the normal case: you want to know what is wrong and what it would cost to fix. That visit and the written estimate are free. Formal documents — a risk assessment report for an HOA, a tree appraisal, or a letter for an insurer or attorney — take real desk time and are quoted separately.
How do I check an arborist's credentials?
Ask which certification they hold, who issued it, and for the number. A real credential comes with an issuing body that will confirm it. Pair that with a certificate of insurance and you have filtered most of a bid list in five minutes.
Do you offer discounts for multiple trees?
Effectively yes — the second tree on the same visit costs less than it would on its own because setup, travel and haul-off are already covered. If you have several trees needing attention, get them all quoted at once rather than one at a time.
Do you give free estimates in North Texas?
Yes. Someone comes out, looks at the tree, and you get a written price with the scope spelled out — no charge and no obligation. We do not quote tree work over the phone from a description, because the things that change the price (access, what is underneath, how the wood has to come out) are not visible from a description.
Do you clean up afterwards?
Completely. Brush chipped and hauled, wood removed or stacked as you prefer, ground raked and blown off. We walk the site with you before we leave. Clean-up is included in the quoted price — it is not a line item that appears later.
Can you work around my schedule?
Usually. Most residential work happens on weekdays during business hours, but we can often arrange early starts or a specific day if access, pets or gates require it. Commercial properties routinely get after-hours or weekend scheduling.
Do you serve areas outside North Texas?
Yes — our regular territory covers Tarrant, Johnson, Parker, Hill and Bosque Counties and the cities inside them. North Texas is on our normal route.
How soon can you get to my property in North Texas?
Estimates in North Texas are usually within a couple of business days. Scheduled work typically runs one to two weeks out depending on season — spring and post-storm periods are busiest. Hazard situations get moved to the front of the queue.
