What tree trimming actually involves
Trimming is four kinds of cut, and a good crew is deliberate about which one they are making. Crown cleaning takes out dead, dying, diseased and crossing wood — it removes no live canopy and is the safest thing you can do to almost any tree. Crown raising lifts the lowest limbs for clearance over a drive, walk or roof. Crown thinning selectively removes interior branches to let wind through. Crown reduction shortens over-extended limbs back to a lateral big enough to take over as the new leader.
The number that governs all of it is 25 percent: removing much more than a quarter of a tree's live canopy in one season starves it, and it responds by throwing weak, fast-growing water sprouts that are worse than what you removed. If a quote proposes taking half the tree, that is not trimming.
We do not top trees
Topping — cutting limbs back to stubs with no lateral to take over — is still the most common thing done to trees in North Texas and it is indefensible. The stubs decay, the regrowth is attached only to the outer wood, and in five years you own a taller, heavier, weaker tree with an open decay column down the trunk. If a tree is genuinely too big for its spot, reduction or removal are the honest answers.

We look at the whole tree from several angles before a saw comes out — attachment points, deadwood, previous cuts, lean, and what is under it.
Agree the scope in writing
You get a written estimate that says which cuts we are making and roughly how much wood is coming off. No verbal-only scope.
Rope down what matters
Anything over a roof, fence, pool or bed gets rigged and lowered rather than dropped.
Cut to the collar
Every cut is made just outside the branch collar so the tree can compartmentalise it. No flush cuts, no stubs, no wound paint except on oaks in season.
Leave it clean
Chips and brush go with us, the ground gets blown off, and you get a walk-through before we pull out.

General liability and workers' compensation, with the certificate sent before you book. Texas does not license tree services at state level, so this is the question that actually filters a bid list.

Tree Trimming — frequently asked
How often should trees be trimmed in North Texas?
Mature shade trees generally want attention every three to five years; young trees benefit from a structural prune every two to three years while the scaffold branches are still small enough to correct cheaply. Storm-damaged trees are the exception — those get looked at when the damage happens.
What time of year is best for trimming in North Texas?
Late summer through winter is the best general window in North Texas. For oaks it is not optional: avoid February 1 through June 30 entirely because of oak wilt. Dead and hazardous wood can come out any time of year on any species.
Do you give free estimates in North Texas?
Yes. Someone comes out, looks at the tree, and you get a written price with the scope spelled out — no charge and no obligation. We do not quote tree work over the phone from a description, because the things that change the price (access, what is underneath, how the wood has to come out) are not visible from a description.
How long does the work usually take in North Texas?
Most residential jobs are a single day. A straightforward trim on one or two trees is a half day; a large removal that has to be rigged over a house can run two. We give you a realistic window in the written estimate rather than a hopeful one.
Do you clean up afterwards?
Completely. Brush chipped and hauled, wood removed or stacked as you prefer, ground raked and blown off. We walk the site with you before we leave. Clean-up is included in the quoted price — it is not a line item that appears later.
Can you work near power lines?
Up to a point. Anything in contact with a service drop or a primary conductor is the utility's to clear first — we do not cut energised lines and neither should anyone who is not a qualified line-clearance crew. We handle everything outside those clearances.
Can you work around my schedule?
Usually. Most residential work happens on weekdays during business hours, but we can often arrange early starts or a specific day if access, pets or gates require it. Commercial properties routinely get after-hours or weekend scheduling.
What if I only want an opinion, not work done?
That is fine and it is free. A fair share of what we look at does not need what it was quoted for. We would rather tell you that and be the people you call next time.
