What a tree surgeon actually does
There is no licence called “tree surgeon” in Texas — the phrase came over from Britain and carries no legal meaning here. Anyone with a truck and a saw can print it on a door magnet. What the phrase does describe accurately is the work: operating on a living structure, where every cut is permanent and the tree either compartmentalises it or starts decaying from it.
The credential that means something is Certified Arborist — a broad written examination in tree biology, diagnosis, soil science, pruning standards and safety, kept current with continuing education. Ask any bidder which certification they hold, who issued it, and for the number. A real credential comes with a body that will confirm it.
The tell is topping
Ask a prospective tree surgeon whether they top trees. If the answer is anything other than no, keep looking. Topping — cutting limbs back to stubs with no lateral to take over — leaves decay columns down the trunk and regrowth attached only to the outer wood. It is quick, it is profitable, and five years later it is your problem.

Is a tree surgeon the same as an arborist?
In everyday use, yes — most people mean the same thing. The difference worth caring about is that “arborist” has a real certification behind it and “tree surgeon” does not. Someone can call themselves a tree surgeon with no training whatsoever, so ask what certification they actually hold.
How much does a tree surgeon cost in North Texas?
Most climbing and cutting work in North Texas runs $250–$2,500 depending on tree size, how much of it sits over something valuable, and how much deadwood has accumulated. A straightforward crown clean on a mid-size tree is at the low end; a large multi-day rigging job over a roof is at the top. Estimates are free and written.
Will you damage my lawn or sprinkler system?
We plate or mat soft ground before anything heavy crosses it, and we ask you to flag sprinkler heads and low-voltage lighting, which do not show up on a utility locate. Some rutting is possible on saturated ground — if it happens, repairing it is on us.
How soon can you get to my property in North Texas?
Estimates in North Texas are usually within a couple of business days. Scheduled work typically runs one to two weeks out depending on season — spring and post-storm periods are busiest. Hazard situations get moved to the front of the queue.
Do you serve areas outside North Texas?
Yes — our regular territory covers Tarrant, Johnson, Parker, Hill and Bosque Counties and the cities inside them. North Texas is on our normal route.
Can you work around my schedule?
Usually. Most residential work happens on weekdays during business hours, but we can often arrange early starts or a specific day if access, pets or gates require it. Commercial properties routinely get after-hours or weekend scheduling.
Do you clean up afterwards?
Completely. Brush chipped and hauled, wood removed or stacked as you prefer, ground raked and blown off. We walk the site with you before we leave. Clean-up is included in the quoted price — it is not a line item that appears later.
Do you give free estimates in North Texas?
Yes. Someone comes out, looks at the tree, and you get a written price with the scope spelled out — no charge and no obligation. We do not quote tree work over the phone from a description, because the things that change the price (access, what is underneath, how the wood has to come out) are not visible from a description.
